This species of poppy is native to Europe. Its seeds can remain dormant for many years and germinate when the soil is disturbed and seeds uncovered. It for this reason it appeared profusely in Flanders and is now adopted as the symbol of remembrance. For best results sow in the Autumn. Seeds mainly germinate in the Spring with some flowering in the Autumn. The flower size is related to the soil fertility, with lower fertility resulting in smaller blooms. This hardy annual likes full sun and neutral to alkaline soils. Also called Corn Poppy, Corn Rose, Field Poppy, Flanders Poppy, Red Poppy it has an acrid taste and is mildly poisonous to livestock. It will struggle to thrive in a meadow as it is an annual and needs Autumn cultivation and the seeds to chill to germinate, but can provide the odd bloom now and then where the conditions are right.
